Don’t know if you all caught Marty Smith’s story, ”Harmon takes Big George’s ashes on ride of a lifetime in Nationwide car,” from Las Vegas Motor Speedway over the weekend. If not, it’s worth the read and it’s tied to Bristol.
In short, driver Mike Harmon fulfilled the wishes of some NASCAR diehards by riding an urn filled with the ashes of their fellow race fan friend around the Speedway for the entire Nationwide Series practice on Friday afternoon.
Smith writes, “As a whole, racecar drivers are a superstitious lot. Not many guys would do this, but Harmon has his reasons. He’s cheated death. At Bristol Motor Speedway in 2002, Harmon narrowly escaped death in a crash during practice that Kenny Wallace called ‘the worst wreck in NASCAR history.’”
