just plain cool

From the “old school” department, this is just a cool snippet worth sharing.  In a span from 1967 through 1971, David Pearson won five Bristol races. Throughout his career, Pearson won a bunch more… 105 wins to be exact, and second only to Richard Petty.

David PearsonFor many of us ol’ die-hards, watching his classic duels with Richard Petty, the Allisons and Cale Yarborough bring back many fond memories. I’m sure quite a few flashbacks were seen yesterday as the 73-year-old turned laps at Darlington Raceway

Good to see the “Silver Fox” can still wheel a race car. Read the full story here.

So fast… It’s scary!

We’ve been pretty busy around Bristol for the past month or so, and we’re only gettin’ busier. While the round track has seen a NASCAR race weekend and a very, very wild Street Stock event (check out the photos), Bristol Dragway also has witnessed its share of action in early-2008.

The Dragway’s biggest event of the season is fast approaching.  It’s the O’Reilly NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals. There’s just nothing like seeing a car go from zero to 330 mph in 4.5 seconds. If you’ve never experienced the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, we invite you to come out to Bristol Dragway, May 16-18. Check out the TV spot below. It’s so fast… It’s scary!

Stock Cars, Trailers and Monster Trucks… Oh my!

Some darn good memories from my good ol’ days come courtesy of the race track, and I ain’t talkin’ about Bristol.  During the late 70s through the mid-90s, we’d often cross the Kentucky-Virginia state line to visit Lonesome Pine Raceway in Coeburn.  Sometimes it was with family, sometimes it was with friends, most of the time it was with both.

Anyway, you could always count on seeing a great show on the track.  Many times you didn’t know what the show would consist of, but it was always entertaining.  Could be Late Model racing or a demolition derby, didn’t matter… You could bank on having fun.

Frank Kimmel Saturday SpectacularThis summer, Bristol Motor Speedway is serving up a bit of that classic short track fun with the four-event “Saturday Spectacular.”

The first one is this Saturday (April 5).  The card features the Frank Kimmel Street Stock 150, a good ol’ knock ‘em out of the way trailer race and a school bus crush by Bristol’s very own monster truck, War Wizard.

The Frank Kimmel Street Stock 150 is open to 99 entries.  Can you imagine starting 99 cars at Bristol?  And the trailer race?  Yep, the ol’ Saturday short track fan in me is lickin’ my chops for that one… Nuthin’ like the chaos of racin’ stock cars towing trailers around a high-banked oval.  And who in their right mind doesn’t like a good Monster Truck metal-crunching every now and then?

Tickets are only 15 bucks and kids 12-and-under get in free.  You can read the official press release here
