Bristol’s has had its share of dominating drivers. There’s Darrell Waltrip, Rusty Wallace and Dale Earnhardt. Even more recent, racers like Jeff Gordon and Kurt Busch have owned the high banks of Bristol for a period of time. But without a doubt, one of Bristol’s true masters is none other than Cale Yarborough.
His Bristol numbers are astounding. In 29 Bristol starts, Cale won nine times. Of the 14,200 laps that made up those 29 races, he completed 10,878 of them (77%). And of those laps completed, 4,305 of them were logged with Yarborough in the lead (see Yarborough’s complete Bristol stats).
Cale’s Bristol success came while driving for NASCAR legend and car owner, Junior Johnson.
The Scotts Saturday Night Special, slated for March 21 at BMS, will see these two reunited… not as owner and driver, but racer against racer.
The below photo features Cale Yarborough and Junior Johnson from 1979, and the car Cale will race at Bristol some 30 years later in the Scotts Saturday Night Special – an event that is event is aptly named, as this step back in racing history promises to be pretty darn “special.”
