As you’ve probably heard by now, we have a new sponsor for our August Sprint Cup Series race… IRWIN TOOLS. The race will be called The IRWIN TOOLS Night Race.
For the first time, officials from IRWIN were in Bristol today to begin making plans for the 2010 race. As part of introductions, we played this video which originally aired in 2008 on SPEED during its pre-race programming.
Immediately I thought, why haven’t we shared this jewel yet? So without further delay, we hope you enjoy this Ken Squier narrated video which takes a look at the rich history and tradition of Bristol Motor Speedway.
I remember the first NASCAR race I attended. My dad and my uncle decided that they wanted to go to “that night race up in Bristol” so we got in the car, drove north and walked up to a ticket booth and purchased our tickets for the very first night race. The Volunteer 500 in 1978. Cale Yarbourough won, Richard Petty finished 5th in his Chevrolet DW spun and after the race We went down in the pits and I got several drivers autographs. I was 12 years old and on top of the world. We went back the next spring, again we bought tickets at the gate..The Southeastern 500 for 1979 had a bigger crowd but we had excellent seats to watch some rookie driver in a light blue and yellow car named Dale Earnhardt win. Watching the local boys who did well for themselves go to victory lane in the number 4 Kodak car (locally owned team) was really popular.
It’s a great video. Nice job!
I finally got to Bristol for the first time last August. It is one of those life long dreams. I will never get tired of watching videos like this one. Bristol, to me, is the most magical, awesome track in NASCAR hands down. My weekend at Bristol will always be one of my favorites.
